About us

EK McQuade was founded by building surveyor and property developer Michael McQuade and Julian Davies, a leading light in the world of building surveying for the property management sector. Between them, they developed a bespoke system that is now applied by the highly experienced EK McQuade team to offer an unparalleled Party Wall service to both Building Owners and Adjoining Owners.

Small enough to offer a personal, boutique service to our clients, but large enough to meet their needs throughout the course of a project, our team has a combined 60 years’ experience in Party Wall matters. We are members of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and the Pyramus and Thisbee Club, and take an active interest in how the field is developing. Our own approach is business-like, engaged and commercially minded, so our focus is on getting things done sooner rather than later – without compromising on attention to detail.

The core team comprises:

  • Julian Davies — Founder and Managing Director of EK Mcquade / Earl Kendrick Building Surveyors and a recognised thought leader in the property industry.
  • Darryl Colquhoun — Associate Director, who has previously worked for leading Party Wall consultancies in London and has been involved in the agreement and service of countless awards on commercial and residential schemes.
  • James Gillies — an experienced Building and Party Wall Surveyor - James advises extensively on Party Wall Matters and Licences to Alter.
  • Abbie Reid — Senior Party Wall Surveyor - Abbie is professionally qualified with a master’s degree in building surveying from UCEM and several years industry experience. She is a member of both the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and the Pyramis & Thisbee club
  • Michael McQuade — a property developer in his own right, who founded McQuade Property Consultancy in 2005 and developed an unrivaled reputation for excellence in Party Wall matters before merging the firm into EK McQuade in 2016.

Julian Davies

Founder and Managing Director

Julian Davies MRICS RMaPs MFPWS is recognised as a thought leader for the property industry and is regularly invited to speak at industry events, represent trade associations and contribute to publications, bringing his invaluable experience to a wide audience. Julian became a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2004 working for seven years largely in the residential sector. In 2010 he founded Earl Kendrick to build a team of talented surveyors serving a wide variety of clients, across the country.

Julian has always ensured the company’s core values are reflected in the approach taken by any member of his team. He has developed market-leading and tailored processes for clients, reflecting the real-life situation where tenants and residents’ needs are met too. Carefully thought out procedures for long term planned maintenance, programmes of major works, reinstatement cost assessments, licence to alter, party wall matters and more, mean Earl Kendrick can boast an industry-leading range of services. Julian himself acts as expert witness which has helped countless clients with their property related disputes.

Over the years, Earl Kendrick’s geographical reach has expanded from London to Manchester, Bristol and Brighton. The Group now benefits from dedicated companies for leaseholder alterations, insurance claim and revaluations, and party wall work too.

Julian has led the team to be proud recipients of many industry awards and accolades including winner of the national Property Management Awards for Building Surveyor of the Year, four years in a row.

Darryl Colquhoun

Darryl Colquhoun

Associate Director – EK McQuade

Darryl is well versed in Party Wall matters, and has worked for some of the leading consultancies in London that practise in this field.  Before specialising in Party Wall matters, Darryl practised as a general building surveyor and gained experience in building surveys, defects investigations and in construction.  Over time, he found that he had a particular aptitude for carrying out the duties of an appointed surveyor under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, and decided to progress his career by specialising as a Party Wall surveyor.  Since then, he has been involved in the agreement and service of countless awards on commercial and residential schemes.

Whether a developer is proposing to carry out substantial works or a homeowner intending to carry out minor works to their property, Darryl will advise on their rights and obligations under the Act and the best way to utilise this piece of legislation.  Likewise, if an adjoining owner has had notice served on them, he will ensure their rights are protected under the Act and they are kept abreast of the rights of the building owner who is proposing to carry out the works.

Darryl is a member of the Pyramus and Thisbe Club, who promote excellence in Party Wall practice and he actively keeps up to date with their CPD events.

James Gillies

James Gillies

Building & Party Wall Surveyor

James has over 15 years’ experience in the built environment, starting his career as a land surveyor with large engineering projects throughout London, before switching career path to building surveying for the last 11 years with a small building surveying practice based in Essex and London, specialising in high net worth residential property.

James enjoys the challenges involved with being a surveyor, originating from a small firm has meant that James has practical experience in a wide range of properties and types of works that a building surveyor may encounter within the residential and commercial sector. He has achieved planning permission for a number of difficult sites, and has carried out a number of external and internal refurbishment contract administration works within London.

James advises extensively on Party Walls and Licences to Alter being a member of the faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and a Pyramus & Thisbe Club.

In his spare time James is currently building his own little grand design, having acquired land and gained planning permission for a family home.

Sarah-Faye Pigrem

Building Surveyor

Sarah-Faye is a Building Surveyor working out of the London office, enjoying a wide range of surveying projects for residential sector clients.

Sarah-Faye, also known as SF to her friends and colleagues, has over 20 years’ experience across a breadth of property industry sectors and spent 5 years working as a property manager for a prominent central London block management company. This has enabled her to fully appreciate the challenges faced by agents and surveyors, and see matters objectively from their mutual clients’ viewpoint. Sarah-Faye is well equipped in managing projects directly for RMC/freehold clients and of course for managing agents – so liaison with leaseholders, freeholders, block managers, contractors and designers is taken in her stride.

Sarah-Faye achieved a Diploma in Building Surveying from the University of Estate Management in 2019, and is completing the final semester of her BSc Hons in Building Surveying. Actively working towards achieving her RICS APC, Sarah-Faye is relishing the transition from building management to building surveying.

Sarah-Faye has a passion for defect analysis and historic buildings, so plenty of opportunity to practice her passions at EK, the ideal place to grow and develop her technical skills to complement her outstanding customer flair.

In her spare time, SF is an active rock climber and hard-core caver!

Abbie Reid

Senior Party Wall Surveyor

Abbie is a Senior Party Wall Surveyor for EK McQuade, she is professionally qualified with a master’s degree in building surveying from UCEM and several years industry experience. She is a member of both the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and the Pyramis & Thisbee club.

She originally began her career in property training new starters for a prominent London Estate Agency where her role was to coach new and existing consultants on how to break the stigma attached to Estate Agents and how best for them to represent the company values by being open, honest, and ethical whilst maximising property sales.

In 2017 she made the decision to switch careers to Building Surveying after completing her Propertymark exam in the Sale of Residential Property, which included a need to learn basic construction knowledge.

She started at a small general building surveying practice as a Trainee Surveyor and after completing her master’s degree via distance learning and working full time, she worked her way up to Senior Surveyor. Where she was managing not only the majority of the Party Wall projects but also training Junior & Trainee Surveyors in general surveying practice with a speciality in Party Wall and helping to coach them through becoming members of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors.

In her spare time, she enjoys running her small Etsy business making accessories and homeware, playing hockey and exploring with her Dobermann Nash.
